Forums

This first week of October has seen Dexway launch its forums, a new studying environment enabling students to enhance their cultural learning as well as encourage their interaction with the tutors. From now on, you will be able to share your opinions regarding present day affairs, learn new customs, traditions and festivities whilst meeting students from all around the world who are studying the same language as you.  The forums are run and led by the dexway tutoring team, as always ready to help you through the One2One virtual classroom 24x7x365.

How does one access the forums?

Connect to the www.dexway.com platform and start up a session by using your access codes so as to access the Dexway Community. Having done this, click on “Enter” within the Forum box. This will automatically upload the respective forums and threads to your course.

Alternately, you can also access from your platform by clicking on Communication>Forums.

How do the forums work?

Tutors will propose, via the forums, various activities and themes related to a range of cultural aspects of the given country. By doing this, the cultural training is achieved through student-tutor interactions.

Tutors are therefore in charge of proposing the given activity as well as moderating and making the threads more dynamic. In addition to publishing comments through written text, the tutors will put up a recorded video so that the students can appreciate the pronunciation, intonation and non-verbal language. In Dexway, we like to make the most out of each and every moment to encourage written and oral comprehension whilst humanizing the e-learning experience by using the tutors’ videos.

What themes will be dealt with?

Four themes will be explored and will be constantly updated. The thematic choice depends on the relevance and importance for the learning process.

Forums vs. Study Groups

We recently announced the launching of the Study Groups, an environment whereby students can share experiences, chat and practice various grammatical aspects or use of language they consider useful. The exchange takes place via a videoconference virtual classroom with an interactive virtual whiteboard and projector, available 24x7x365.

Forums are asynchronous communication tools which stimulate reflection, investigation, and writing instead of the more spontaneous and oral-based framework of the study groups. Both of these training methods are essential in your language learning and we highly recommend that you use them as often as you wish.

Dexway brings the classroom to your home without you having to go anywhere, and offers you complete access to our native tutors available 24x7x365 through the virtual classroom One2One.

Picture for the Professional English for Tourism (Cross: MF 1057_2) course
During this course the learner will acquire the necessary language skills and vocabulary to successfully understand oral and written messages of an intermediate complexity in English.

This course provides opportunities for the learner to respond professionally to the language used in familiar situations by guests, customers and suppliers to the tourist service by attending satisfactorily to the needs they have.

Throughout the course, the learner will come across very many real situations.
In these situations the learner has to interpret the communicative aims of the writers and numerous interlocutors to effectively deal with what occurs.

These tourist sector clients and customers write, appear in person and speak by phone and the learner has to respond to each situation by using the phone, the fax, booking forms, contracts, customer satisfaction surveys and email appropriately.

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to fluently express themselves with customers and suppliers at an intermediate level in a way fitting that of a tourist industry professional in the following
areas: customer service and attention, working with travel agencies, tourist information offices, transport suppliers, contingency and emergency resolutions, tourist product offers and solving complaints.

Picture for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) course
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) measures a non-native English speaker’s ability to communicate and learn in a university environment. It is an entrance requirement for study in U.S. colleges and universities. The TOEFL is organized around the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. It combines these skills in various ways in two possible settings, either the university classroom/lecture hall, or the informal student campus. The test tasks may measure one, two or three skills at a time. For instance, there may be a short reading passage, followed by an audio lecture by a professor. Then the test taker will be asked to relate what he has read and heard in writing, similar to what a college student might be asked to do in the classroom.
The Dexway TOEFL Preparatory Course guides the student through the same tasks he will encounter on the test. Think of it as a test simulation course. All the test tasks are presented in the course multiple times with one difference: The time requirement is not enforced until the cumulative lessons. This way, the student is able to grow used to the test environment without the pressure of time constraints. Additionally, valuable test-taking skills recommended by the Educational Testing Service, which produces the TOEFL, are also explained. In six virtual classes, the student has the opportunity to practice with a tutor and receive feedback on his performance. The student can gradually hone his skills until the final lessons when he goes through an actual test simulation.
To quote the TOEFL Tips PDF published by the Educational Testing Service, the TOEFL measures how well students use English, not just how much they know. It confirms that the student has the English language skills necessary to be successful in a university setting. Since it is the most popular and accepted English-language test in the world, students are able to use their TOEFL scores worldwide. More than 6,000 colleges, universities and agencies in 110 countries accept TOEFL scores. It is available in more than 180 countries.

Picture for the First Certificate in English (FCE) course
Based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the level B2 students will be able to acquire the following skills:
-To be able to understand the main ideas of a given text regarding both concrete and abstract topics, including debates in their field of specialization
-To be able to interact regularly with native-speakers to a high degree of fluency and spontaneity in a pressure free and natural manner.
-To be able to write clear and detailed texts on a wide range of topics whilst systematically supporting their point of view by distinguishing the pros and cons of a given subject matter.
The Cambridge ESOL exams (English for Speakers of Other Languages) enjoy large recognition on an international scale and a significant amount of effort is carried out to insure both its validity and reliability. Each FCE exam is the result of some three years of work on behalf of the examiners who are perfectly qualified and trained to write and correct the tests. The FCE consists of five exams (papers).
1. Reading Comprehension
The style and content of the texts are based on the type of material the candidate has access to on a day-to-day basis, for instance, informative pamphlets, newspapers, magazines and letters.
2. Writing
The candidates must write two written pieces, each between 120 and180 words long approximately.
3. Use of English
The candidates carry out a series of tasks which assess their capacity to recognise and use the grammatical structures and vocabulary of the English language. The tasks consist in filling in the gap exercises, transforming sentences, making words and correcting mistakes.
4. Listening
The candidates listen to a series of recorded texts which range from dialogues, short monologues, adverts or interview extracts. It is not expected that they understand the recording word for word, given that what is assessed and valued is their ability to understand the main points and extract specific information.
5. Interview
This is an oral exam whereby the moderator assesses the candidate’s ability to communicate and capacity to provide personal information while taking into account his or her fluency, pronunciation, use of vocabulary and English grammar.
